Aurea McGarry became a public speaker and TV host the same way she became knowledgeable about domestic violence and cancer. She did it all the hard way.
Her experience with domestic violence was up-close and personal, learned from seven years of abuse in her first marriage.
Cancer was also very personal, in the form of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She underwent drastic surgery, which removed a nerve to her vocal cord, part of each lung and her Thymus. Then she endured grueling chemotherapy. But she was able to defy the doctors’ predictions that she would never speak above a faint whisper. She has been cancer-free since 2000 and able to speak despite the grim diagnosis.
Her life experiences provide the empathy and her theatre and television training have given her the skills to communicate in a professional way about the sensitive issues of domestic abuse and overcoming cancer.
McGarry is a native of New York City where she studied theatrical arts and appeared on the television soap opera, The Edge of Night. Now living in the metro-Atlanta area, the dynamic entrepreneur, mother and grandmother married her “prince charming” Brian 13 years ago.
Her book I Won’t Survive, I’ll Thrive! tells her personal story of facing and overcoming poverty, abuse and life-threatening illness.
She speaks most frequently on "Why Women Stay in Abusive Relationships," but also offers high-energy presentations on entrepreneurism and direct sales. She achieved notable success as senior sales director with Mary Kay Cosmetics and she has co-authored Manifest Success, an inspiring business book for entrepreneurs.
McGarry’s throaty voice is part of her charm as she lives her dream, producing and hosting her national television show “Live Your Legacy with Aurea McGarry.” One of her newest episodes, a feature on Noah’s Ark Animal & Children Rehabilitation Center, is airing on Public Broadcasting Atlanta (PBA 30).
McGarry was named Mrs. U.S. Beauty of Georgia 2003 and honored as the most inspirational contestant. She is a member of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS), National Associate of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) and the Atlanta Press Club. She lives in Cumming with her husband, daughter and granddaughter.
