Chess Camp Gives Kids Skills, Hope and Inspiration

Be Someone, founded by chess champion Orrin Hudson, will conduct a chess camp July 14-18 to empower young people to take charge of their lives and make every move count. The chess camp is designed for 6- to 19-year-olds and will be conducted at Redan Middle School, which is located at 1775 Young Road in Lithonia.

Be Someone uses the game of chess to teach problem-solving strategies and life skills, and to offer kids a positive alternative to gangs, drugs, crime, and violence. Consider how chess enriches a child’s life: learning the rules, mastering the moves, and thinking analytically; developing patience, concentration and problem-solving skills; recognizing and accepting the responsibility that cause and effect illustrate; experiencing the enhanced self-esteem that results from achievement; and enjoying the hope and promise that well-deserved success inspires.

Since 2001, Hudson has taught more than 20,000 kids the meaning of making every move count, and the program continues to expand. “My goal is to mentor one million students, in all 50 states, by 2010. I need the help of dedicated business people, community leaders and educators to continue this work.”

Hudson and his work with Be Someone have been featured on television and radio as well as in a variety of print media, and recognized with dozens of community service, educational, and leadership awards. Jack Canfield, the popular motivational speaker who wrote the forward for Orrin’s book, actress Jane Fonda, and other prominent Americans have come to praise the mission of the Be Someone program.

“Through Orrin’s amazing abundance of positive energy and ability to connect with youth, the chess program he has run has far exceeded my expectations,” Ms. Fonda wrote in support of Be Someone. “Through teaching kids the fundamentals of chess, while taking pride in his work and going the extra mile, Orrin has helped them develop long-term strategic thinking and goal-setting skills ..., and has brought self-esteem to many children within Atlanta schools... all to help beat the odds [for youth]. Orrin is an excellent mentor and role model for our young people,” The G-CAPP (Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention) founder concluded.

You can be a part of changing the world one move at a time by sponsoring a child for this life-changing event. As Be Someone ambassadors, campers will learn how to pay it forward and help the least, the last and the lost to make the right moves in life.
