Karlie Stanton Earns APR Certification
|

ATLANTA – September 4, 2008 – Karlie Stanton, project communications manager at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and a member of the Georgia Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA|GA), was awarded her APR (Accredited in Public Relations) certification at the Chapter’s monthly luncheon today.
“Accreditation marks the next level of professional accomplishment for public relations professionals. Earning the designation is the culmination of stellar work and industry knowledge. We are thrilled that Ms. Stanton is joining the ranks of these elite professionals in Georgia and across the country,” said Renee Kopkowski, 2008 PRSA|GA Chapter president and vice president of Internal and External Communications for Mars Snackfood U.S.
Stanton’s New Year’s resolution for 2008 was to become accredited and she accomplished her goal in late June. And she has already begun mentoring others in PRSA|GA working toward the APR designation.
Prior to her current position at the AJC, Stanton worked in public and media relations for AutoTrader.com, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention and Business Wire Atlanta. Stanton has been an active member for more than seven years and has served on many committees for PRSA|GA, including chair of the Young Professionals group and member of the College Relations and Award committees. She currently serves on the Membership Committee and is the first to welcome new members to the chapter.
Stanton is a second-generation PR practitioner. Her mother, Judy Stanton, received accreditation nearly 30 years ago.
Created in 1964, APR is the voluntary certification program for public relations professionals and was established to unify and advance the profession by identifying those who have demonstrated mastery of a body of knowledge as well as recognition of experience and professional judgment in the field. The process is governed by the Universal Accreditation Board, of which PRSA is a lead participant.
PRSA members who have at least five years of paid, fulltime experience in the professional practice of public relations, or in the teaching or administration of public relations courses in an accredited college or university, are encouraged to participate in the accreditation process.
To employers and clients, the award of APR, which is used after the member’s name, signals a person who has excelled in the practice of public relations. It is a benchmark to those who have earned it to his or her peers.
Preparation for the exam requires six to 12 months of study and the Chapter offers study materials and support sessions on evenings and weekends to prepare members for the exam. Study for the APR culminates with a rigorous examination including both written and oral components.
PRSA|GA (www.prsageorgia.org), the second-largest local chapter in the national society, consists of nearly 1,000 professionals throughout Georgia. Its mission is to enhance the profession, provide continuing education and offer networking opportunities for its members.
The Chapter has monthly meetings as well as nine Special Interest Groups (Employee Communications, Government/Military Affairs, Healthcare, Independent Counselors, Leader Board, Nonprofit, Technology, Travel & Tourism, and Young Professionals) that meet at various times.
The Chapter supports six PRSSA (student society) groups at these colleges: Clark Atlanta University, Georgia College & State University, Georgia State University, Georgia Southern University, Kennesaw State University and University of Georgia. # # # Contact: Denise Grant 770-449-6369 denise.grant@prsageorgia.org
