OTHER INFORMATION:

The Enchanted Closet is a volunteer-run, non-profit service organization whose mission is to physically, mentally, and emotionally outfit Metro Atlanta high school girls from low-income families through programs that prepare them for social and professional milestones.

Enchanted Closet’s purpose is to cultivate the self-discovery, self esteem, and self sufficiency of girls. The organization provides services that celebrate girlhood while helping teen girls grow into womanhood with knowledge and confidence. The Enchanted Closet is the 2007-2008 recipient of the Georgia State University President’s Outstanding Community Partner Award for Community Service and Social Action.

Since 2003, the Prom Dress Giveaway Program has served as the vehicle to outfit over 2200 girls for the most important social event of their high school career. Realizing the connection between clothing and self esteem, the Enchanted Closet strives to boost the confidence and self-esteem of the girls by making sure they look and feel good on prom night. The Prom Dress Giveaway Program provides an opportunity for teenage girls to “shop” for a dress and accessories for a nominal handling fee. A supplement to the Prom Dress Giveaway is the highly anticipated Prom Prep 101 Workshop that includes etiquette training, tips on developing a budget, and safety do’s and don’ts.

In five years, more than 200 girls have benefited from life skills workshops provided by the organization. The GIRL$ Program, a service-learning program which was birthed from the organization’s GIRL$ Camp Initiative, a two-week, micro-enterprise summer camp funded through the generous support of the Ryan Cameron Foundation, helps to “outfit” the girls of metro Atlanta with the tools for enhanced growth, self sufficiency, and success. The GIRL$ Program provides sessions focused on Self Discovery, Leadership, Mentorship, Economic and Social Entrepreneurship, and Citizenship, and helps girls see how they can leverage their knowledge and talents to help themselves and their communities. The final day of the program includes a graduation exercise and showcase, and each GIRL$ Program graduate receives a certificate of completion and a business suit.

The Enchanted Closet’s Student Ambassador Program enables girls in the 10th grade to participate in community service activities, experience teamwork, and further develop their communication and leadership skills. Student Ambassadors participate in and promote the Prom Dress Giveaways, Prom Prep101, and the GIRL$ Program. The Student Ambassadors also serve as models, personal shoppers, accessory coordinators, photographers and registrars for their peers during the Prom Dress Giveaways held each Spring.
