Kids will become urban planners on Saturday, June 27 at the public workshop for the Poncey-Highland Master Plan.
With help from the Atlanta chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the second community meeting for the master plan will be uniquely family-friendly. The meeting, which starts at 9:00 a.m., will take place at Druid Hills Baptist Church, 1085 Ponce de Leon Ave. NE (corner of Ponce and N. Highland Avenues).
“The young families of Poncey-Highland are bringing new energy and new kinds of neighborhood leadership to District 2,” said Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall, who represents the area. “We wanted to do everything possible to include these families in the master planning process. It was important to me that we offer age-appropriate urban design activities and free childcare to encourage everyone’s participation in the neighborhood’s future.”
Starting at 9:00 a.m., AIA-Atlanta volunteers will spread out large maps of Poncey-Highland and help the neighborhood’s youngest residents envision the next 25 – 50 years. Around 10:30 a.m., the children will make presentations to their parents and other adults attending the workshop.
Throughout the morning, adult attendees will be involved in hands-on activities of their own. Working with facilitators, they will gather around maps of the neighborhood to discuss future land uses, streetscapes, greenspaces, historic preservation, traffic and transportation, and other topics.
More than 100 residents and stakeholders convened at the Carter Center on June 17 for the first community meeting of the master plan. The third and fourth community meetings are planned for August and September. Later this fall, after review by the Poncey-Highland Neighborhood Association and Neighborhood Planning Unit-N, the final plan will be considered by the Atlanta City Council for inclusion in the city’s comprehensive development plan.
The planning process is being led by Tunnell-Spangler Walsh, an Atlanta-based design firm, in partnership with Councilmember Hall and the City of Atlanta’s Department of Planning and Community Development.
