ToolBank USA Receives Award From The UPS Foundation

$135,000 toward custom tool-tracking platform

ToolBank USA received a $135,000 from The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS (NYSE:UPS). The grant will be used to build a technology platform designed for deployment at ToolBank USA affiliate locations as they are established across the country.

ToolBank USA, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, was launched last year by a grant from The Home Depot Foundation with the mission of replicating the ToolBank program in cities across the domestic U.S. The value of the ToolBank model has been recognized by communities such as Charlotte, Baltimore, Savannah, Boulder, Houston, Galveston and others, which are now actively engaged in the formation process to build ToolBanks of their own.

The ToolBank program was started in 1992 at the Atlanta Community ToolBank, which stewards a vast inventory of tools for use by charitable organizations throughout metro Atlanta. Nonprofits, places of worship, public schools, and neighborhood associations borrow shovels, ladders, drills, wheelbarrows, and much more to increase the impact of volunteers while reducing program costs. The Atlanta Community ToolBank equipped nearly 40,000 volunteers in 2008, and tool demand in 2009 has increased more than 100% over last year.

“More than ever before, the charitable sector is being asked to do more with less,” said ToolBank USA CEO Mark Brodbeck. “Each local ToolBank will make the ambitious goals of charitable groups attainable, and turn potential into impact. The timing of The UPS Foundation’s support is perfect, and we look forward to sharing the success of the Atlanta Community ToolBank with the rest of the country.”

Earlier in 2009, ToolBank USA completed an eight-month selection process to identify a vendor for the new inventory system, and selected REM Enterprise Solutions. “We’re excited to be part of ToolBank USA’s expansion strategy,” said Rick Loose, President of REM Enterprise Solutions. “Using our Kanonix product, we’ll be able to bring new ToolBanks online across the country in as few as 30 days per site.”

“We became aware of ToolBank USA last year and thought it was a great concept,” said Ken Sternad, president of the UPS Foundation. “[It’s] a simple but very needed service — linking volunteer organizations to provide tools. The UPS Foundation is committed to funding innovative and impactful programs that make a meaningful difference in our communities - so we are proud to support ToolBank USA's efforts to successfully export the ToolBank program.”

Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, GA, The UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its backing clearly impacts social issues. In support of this strategic approach, The UPS Foundation has identified the following focus areas for giving: non-profit effectiveness, economic & global literacy, encouraging diversity, community safety and environmental sustainability.

In 2008, The UPS Foundation distributed $46.9 million worldwide through grants that benefit organizations or programs such as ToolBank USA and provide support for building stronger communities.
