Dawson County, Ga., Wears its Patriotism on its Sleeve

Fifth Annual Veterans Day Celebration is county’s tribute to those who’ve served

DAWSON COUNTY GA – Dawson County is holding its Fifth Annual Veterans Day Celebration on Wednesday, November 11, 2009. This free event begins at 1 p.m. with a Veterans Reception at Dawson County Middle School, followed by a parade at 3 p.m. and a ceremony honoring military veterans and public servants at 4 p.m. Visit www.dawson.org and click on “Festivals and Special Events” for details.

Join the celebration
Join the gathering at 1 p.m. at the Dawson County Middle School cafeteria where the Veterans Reception will take place. This moving tribute will celebrate Dawson County Veterans and active duty military personnel, as well as local public servants: Dawson County Sheriff’s Department, Fire Department and Emergency Services.

At 2:15 p.m., the parade line-up begins on Memory Lane, with the parade officially kicking off at 3 p.m. Afterward enjoy a heartfelt Veteran’s Day Service at 4 p.m. at the Dawson County Middle School auditorium.

Event grows each year
During Dawson County’s inaugural event, held on Veterans Day in 2005, there were patriotic vehicles and floats with a procession of Veterans representing the following wars/conflicts: WWII, Korean, Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan. Veterans’ organization represented that year included the Atlanta Chapter of Vietnam Veterans, Motorcycles of Vietnam Veterans and the Dawson County Chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 970.

Each year, Dawson County’s Veterans Day Celebration grows. This year, The National Veterans Day Committee in Washington, DC, designated Veterans Day in Dawsonville, Ga., as a Regional Site for its 2009 Celebration. The honor is based on select Veterans Day observances throughout the country that represent fitting tributes to America’s heroes. Dawson County is one of just two sites in Georgia so designated and will be recognized by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in writing and in person.

Show your patriotism and come to Dawson County on Wednesday, November 11, for the Fifth Annual Veterans Day Celebration. Admission is free. Visit www.dawson.org for event details.

Dawsonville-Dawson County is located in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains, just 50 minutes north of Atlanta. Edging Lake Lanier and the Appalachian Trail, it is the place to hike, shop, fish, canoe and commune with the kangaroos where the mountains meet the lakes. Plenty of outdoor activities, the highest falls east of the Mississippi at Amicalola Falls and the largest kangaroo conservation habitat outside Australia-even outlet shopping-keep things hopping.
