Fulton County Announces Revitalization Forum

 

The Fulton County Commission, led by Chairman John Eaves, Ph.D., presents the Fulton County Revitalization Forum: Replenishing, Repositioning, and Reclaiming African American Males, on January 28, 2010. The forum will be held in the Cleveland L. Dennard building on Atlanta Tech’s campus from 8:45 am – 7:30 pm.

The Forum is designed to explore best practices to reverse negative trends for African American males in Fulton County, such as plummeting high school graduation rates and high rates of crime, incarceration, and homelessness. Chairman Eaves and the Commission believe that helping one segment of the population will benefit the entire county. Chairman Eaves says, “If the dire situation for African American males is not proactively and comprehensively addressed, the quality of life for all Fulton County residents will erode, as will the county’s resources.”

Event participants include: Congressman John Lewis (D-GA), Commissioner Michael Thurmond - Georgia Department of Labor; Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard, University System of Georgia Chancellor Erroll Davis, Dr. Alvetta Peterman Thomas - President, Atlanta Technical College, and Dr. Robert Franklin - President, Morehouse College.

The forum’s two segments involve stakeholder planning and public participation.

Part I, 8:45 am – 5:00 pm: Business leaders, elected officials, health care providers and educators convene to consolidate best practices and generate new comprehensive strategies. This session features panel discussions, a keynote lunch, and break out sessions for Education, Behavior/Health, Criminal Justice, Housing, and Employment.

Part II, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm: Open to the public and features an address by Mayor Reed and a youth panel discussion.

The Fulton County Revitalization Forum is presented in partnership with Atlanta Technical College and the Institute for Males, and the Georgia Department of Labor. Event supporters include: Atlanta Metropolitan College, The Atlanta Urban League, the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta, Morehouse College, University System of Georgia, and the Technical College System of Georgia.
