Leading Communication Group Shares Insights to Manage Information Overload

IABC Research Foundation Releases Findings from New Study

social-print
Emerging technology has made communication available almost anytime, anywhere. But if we thought we were inundated with information before, "fasten your seatbelts" because it shows no signs of slowing down soon. The International Association of Business Communicators in Atlanta will offer weary individuals some relief, as speaker John Christopher, Ph.D., a trustee and incoming vice chair of the IABC Research Foundation, reviews factors that create information overload and solutions to manage at the chapter luncheon on Tuesday, March 23.

"In modern organizations, information overload is a central communication challenge," said Christopher, drawing from some of the study's key findings. "The lack of relevant information often leads to fatigue and frustration for employees, consumers and the public."

And the culprit? Christopher cites "technological innovations" as a primary factor responsible for "increasing the volume of information" without necessarily elevating its relevancy. "Effective communications is at the core of information overload solutions," he explained. "By understanding your audience's motives, the context of your message, and opportunities for reducing complexity, it's possible to make information relevant and engaging."

As part of his presentation, Christopher will also solicit input from participants about how the Research Foundation can better support IABC members as well as impact the communications profession in general. Professional communicators as well as individuals who would simply like to learn more about how to better navigate this new information age are invited to attend.

In addition to his work with IABC, Christopher is president of People Information + Insights and has 15 years experience leading organizational and communications research that supports business leaders' information and decision-making needs. He holds a doctorate degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology and teaches organizational psychology at Baker College.

Don't miss this opportunity to obtain skills to manage information overload and help shape the future of the IABC Research Foundation. Attend the IABC | Atlanta monthly luncheon and meeting on Tuesday, March 23, from 11:15 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., at Maggiano's Little Italy in Buckhead, 3368 Peachtree Road, NE.

Registration is open to the public and is $32 for members, $47 for guests and $15 for students with a valid student ID. To avoid a $10 late registration fee, sign up by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 19.

Visit the newly revamped IABC | Atlanta Web site to register for the luncheon and learn more about the chapter and upcoming events.

To be entered in a contest for free attendance to this month's luncheon, submit a paragraph to president@iabcatl.com about why IABC is important to you. The winner will be announced and notified by email on Friday, March 19, at noon. If you are not selected as a winner, please visit atlanta.iabc.com to register for the luncheon.
