Multi-Talented Star Jasmine Guy Will Speak at BBA Breakfast on May 27
Actress, Dancer, Director and Teacher to Share Recent Accomplishments
After many years of starring in Hollywood, Jasmine Guy has returned to Atlanta bearing gifts: her acting, her dancing, her directing, her teaching, sometimes her singing, and at all times her gratitude. She will be the featured speaker at the weekly breakfast meeting hosted by the Buckhead Business Association (BBA) on May 27 at the City Club of Buckhead.
“What a treat for us to welcome Jasmine Guy in our midst,” notes Heather Wright, president of the Buckhead organization. “We look forward to hearing her take on the performing arts scene in Atlanta, and the importance of the arts – especially live theater - on the quality of life in our beautiful city.”
In 2009, under the direction of Kenny Leon, Jasmine delivered two powerful starring performances; first in “Miss Evers’ Boys’, and then in “Blues for an Alabama Sky” for the True Colors’ Theatre Company.
Jasmine’s directorial debut in the summer of 2008 sold out houses at the Southwest Arts Center with “For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enough.” This year, while still donning her director’s hat, Jasmine directed the world premiere of “Brownie Points” written by Janece Shaffer, as well as Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye” at Spelman College. She is currently directing “I Dream”, a musical opera based on the life of Martin Luther King, Jr, which will open at the Alliance Theater on July 9 and will run through July 31.
Jasmine will soon be performing in “Raisin’ Cane,” an odyssey of the Harlem Renaissance, with three great jazz musicians: violinist, John Blake; percussionist, Kevin Sharpe; and the incomparable composer and bassist, Avery Sharpe. Jasmine describes her performance in “Raisin Cane” in this way: “Cane releases in me the joy, the song, the pain, and the politics of our rich American history during this potent and vital decade, 1918 – 1930, known as the Harlem Renaissance”. Raisin’ Cane will open at the Southwest Arts Center on June 25 and run through 27.
A multi-talented star of stage, television and screen, Jasmine began her career as a dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center and the Atlanta Ballet. Jasmine later appeared on Broadway in “ Chicago”, “Grease”, “Leader of the Pack”, and “The Wiz”. In film, Jasmine starred in “School Daze”, “Harlem Nights”, “Stompin’ at the Savoy”, and “Klash”. In television, she starred in “A Different World” (for which she won 6 consecutive NAACP Image Awards), “Dead Like Me”, “NYPD Blue”, “ Melrose Place” and most recently “The Vampire Diaries.”
The weekly BBA breakfast meeting is held every Thursday from 7:30 – 9:00 a.m. The City Club of Buckhead is located at 3343 Peachtree Road, Suite 1850. Tickets are $10 for BBA members, and $20 for visitors and guests. For more information, please check the BBA website at www.buckheadbusiness.org.
