Popular Fitness Event Returns with "Real Housewife" Lisa Wu Hartwell as Emcee
Tybee Throws a Fit is back with free workout and watersports activities, celebrity appearances and more!

Tybee Throws a Fit, the Low Country’s largest fitness event, was first held over the weekend of July 4, 2010, in honor of Tybee’s ongoing commitment to health and life after the island’s one-year reign as Health Magazine’s 2009 “America’s Healthiest Beach” was set to end on July 1. Because of the Gulf oil spill, Health held off on naming a successor this year. In solidarity with our friends in the Gulf, we’re back to show we can hold down the fort until Mother Nature cleans up mankind’s mess.
After drawing a crowd of more than 1,000 to locations around the island last time, Tybee Throws a Fit is back Saturday, September 4 for another round of energizing exercise, natural splendor, healthy living and all-around fun in the sun over Labor Day weekend, part of a continuing series set to celebrate healthiest beach and fitness on our big visitors' weekends. This time the event features a dance-party theme and the same aerobics, water sports and beach activities participants loved last time around. Tybee Throws a Fit is just a part of Tybee Island’s Labor Day weekend festivities that include the annual Labor Day Beach Bash. Activities begin at 8 a.m. at locations throughout the island with major events taking place at the Tybee Pier Pavilion.
Free activities available to attendees of the fast-growing event include a wide range of fitness and outdoor recreation led by a fit, notable and diverse range of volunteers. Former “Real Housewives” star Lisa Wu Hartwell and her husband Ed will lead crowds in a demonstration of their workout secrets. Top local trainer Drew Edmonds, personal trainer to the Style Network’s Ruby Gettinger, is returning to offer his “Get Fit Body Blast” workout, a total body exercise for all fitness levels that targets abs, thighs and upper body. All activities are sponsored by Stacye and Lannie Jarrell of Oceanfront Cottage Rentals, Tybee Island’s premier collection of vacation rental homes with on-staff concierge and some of the best locations on the Island.
In keeping with the event’s emphasis on dance, volunteers will offer a belly-dancing class, a kickboxing/dance routine and a cardio exercise where participants will pump up their heart rates to the beat. Local belly dance instructor Deedee Coover, a.k.a. Cybelle, of World Fusion Belly Dance will lead a group in Belly Drills®, a modern take on the ancient Middle Eastern dance style (great for the abs). Coover is a leading Savannah area instructor and performer. Her class schedule and information on private performances are available at her website at www.cybelle3.com. Area trainer C.C. Powell of local studio Synergistic Bodies will lead groups in Zumba®, the international and Latin dance-based workout regimen.
The Tybee Island Y sponsors kickboxing guru Leah Sparks to show students how much fun it is to punch and kick to a dance beat, and Y personal trainer Sunny Weathers, who will offer a “Cardio Kickoff” demonstration. The Tybee Island Y is giving free day and weekend passes to Tybee Throws a Fit Participants. Other businesses throughout the island will offer activities and specials to island visitors during the event and throughout Labor Day weekend.
Café Loco’s Joel Solomon will serve as honorary DJ during breaks between activities, when exercise buffs can either keep dancing or cool down and listen to some island tunes. Café Loco will also sponsor prize drawings and contests during these break times.
Other activities offered by area residents will include stand-up paddleboarding, kiteboarding, limbo, beach bocce, horseshoes, yoga on the beach, children’s activities and more. More events will be added closer to the date of the event, so please check www.tybeethrowsafit.com for more information. You can also become a fan of Tybee Throws a Fit on Facebook and follow on Twitter @TybeeThrowsAFit and hashtag #TTAF.
Future Tybee Throws a Fit events will take place October 7 over Tybee Island's Pirate Fest weekend, again before the Christmas parade and then on New Year's Day 2011, after Tybee Island's famous fireworks and before the annual Polar Bear Plunge.. Event organizers caution that the schedule is subject to change without notice.
