The importance of the news release for Non-Profits.
Today we focus on the three main things your news release should include:
- Stay Focused. It is such a temptation for organizations to launch into the Org-speak of what they do. Don't. Stick to the point of your story - What action you hope the reader to take.
- Try a simple exercise after you've written your story - Write a 1 to 3 sentence condensed version that contains the critical information. Depending on what your release is for, and how complicated the information you are trying to convey, you may want to lead with that paragraph. Compelling information, that leads your reader to want more.
- Don't forget the opportunity to link over to a specific page on your organization's website, where the reader can take another step closer to you by finding out "more information".
And this one last bonus tip: As you read over the release (and have other test-subjects read over it), is it a story that compels the reader toward the action/goal you had originally? If not, rework the release - perhaps simplify it - so that the reader's path is more straightforward to the heart of your story.
