MARTA to Host Green-A-Palooza on April 15
Featuring a Celebration of its Innovative, Energy Efficient Solar Panel Project
Join MARTA for Green-A-Palooza at the Edgewood/Candler Park Rail Station from 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday, April 15. We’ll celebrate all the ways it’s easy being "green" with MARTA, and thank our customers for helping to create a more sustainable planet, one ride at a time.
The celebration kicks off at 3 p.m. with an introduction to MARTA’s premier "green" project, its federally funded Laredo Bus Facility solar canopy installation which is currently under construction. Once completed, the installation will be the largest structure of its kind in Georgia and the second largest at a U.S. transit system.
The solar panels will generate enough electricity to offset a significant portion of the Laredo facility’s annual electricity consumption and will have the same environmental benefit as planting more than 285 acres of trees a year. This innovative and effective initiative will further enhance MARTA’s growing sustainability program which already includes clean fuel buses, water reclamation and harvesting operations, the installation of LED lighting and a waste recycling program.
MARTA Board Chairman Jim Durrett and General Manager/CEO Dr. Beverly A. Scott will join local partners New South Construction, Circle D Enterprises and Norcross-based solar panel manufacturer Suniva to introduce this exciting project.
The festival will get underway following the solar panel presentation. Customers and festival attendees will enjoy entertainment and giveaways while learning why taking transit is one of the best ways to protect our planet.
The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) is the ninth largest transit system in the United States and has provided combined bus and rail service to DeKalb and Fulton Counties and the City of Atlanta for more than 30 years. MARTA serves as the backbone of a growing regional transit network operating 91 bus routes and 38 rail stations on nearly 48 miles of track.
MARTA provides transportation for approximately 500,000 passenger trips and helps to remove more than 100,000 cars off Metro Atlanta roads each day. As the only multi-modal transit system in the state, MARTA is an over $6 billion public asset that offers a unique competency and expertise to the state and region. MARTA serves as a significant economic catalyst attracting major companies and international events to the Metro area, providing transportation to employment centers throughout the region, and offering a direct connection to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which is considered the world’s busiest airport. In 1996 MARTA served as the official transportation provider for the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta.
