Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation Sends Students Mountain Biking
In partnership with the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association’s (SORBA) Trips for Kids program, the Atlanta After-School All-Stars will take students from Brown Middle School on a series of six mountain bike rides in June and July. The grant is part of AFYF’s ongoing commitment, in partnership with the NFL Play 60 campaign, to improve youth fitness and reduce childhood obesity in Georgia. This is the second summer AFYF has funded the program.
"One of the best places for kids to sharpen their bodies and their minds is on two wheels conquering the challenge of climbing a steep hill," said Falcons General Manager Thomas Dimitroff, an avid mountain biker. "This kind of activity gets kids excited and motivated to be active 60 minutes every day."
The rides start on Friday, June 10th at Gainesville State College Trails and run from 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Students will ride the beginner loop, a rocky, rooty, twisty course with hills. The rides will include safety instruction, trail etiquette and learning how to maneuver tight corners and through creeks.
"Kids and bikes go together naturally," said Collier Cato, SORBA’s Trips for Kids director. "Combine that with a day riding on dirt and enjoying the outdoors, and you have a win-win. Kids love it, and our volunteer ride leaders love it. We all take great satisfaction in seeing the smiles on the children’s faces as they accept challenges, master skills and have a blast."
