WSB-TV Channel 2 Meteorologist Karen Minton helps Georgians with H.E.A.T

Heating Energy Assistance Team

One Georgia household in five will struggle to pay its heating bills this winter even though our temperatures have been unseasonably warm, according to the Heating Energy Assistance Team or H.E.A.T.

"We’ve seen the number of people calling us for help double this winter," said H.E.A.T. Board Chairman David Godfrey. " Some 800,000 Georgia households are potentially eligible to receive assistance, but unless donations increase, only a fraction of that number will be helped."

H.E.A.T. has provided energy assistance to Georgia’s less fortunate for nearly 30 years. Funds raised by H.E.A.T. are distributed by the Georgia Department of Human Services through local community action agencies.

Federal funds for energy assistance have been cut drastically and, with the challenging economy, the impact could be severe. Responding to the critical need, WSB-TV Channel 2 is launching a public service campaign with Meteorologist Karen Minton, SCANA Energy and H.E.A.T. to encourage Channel 2 viewers to donate to the nonprofit organization. In addition to its significant corporate donation, beginning February 15th through the end of March, SCANA Energy will match viewer donations dollar for dollar up to $15,000.

"We’re proud to continue our support of the Heating Energy Assistance Team and also partner with WSB-TV to help those in need," said George Devlin, vice president and general manager of SCANA Energy. "It’s what you do to give back to the communities you serve," said Devlin. "We’re in Georgia for the long haul, and as long as we can give, Georgia can rest assured that we will."

"This is another great example of how the Family 2 Family Project and its Underwriters come together to meet community needs. We are excited that SCANA Energy has provided an incentive to help increase donations during this winter season," said WSB-TV Vice President & General Manager Tim McVay.

SCANA Energy is the only natural gas marketer in Georgia that makes it possible for customers to donate to H.E.A.T. through their bills which results in significant additional funding for H.E.A.T. Important links : or
