Atlanta Business Professionals Raise Record Funds for Blood Cancer

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Announces Man & Woman of the Year

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) announced its Man & Woman of the Year Saturday night at their campaign’s Grand Finale at the Loews Atlanta Hotel. Fourteen local community leaders---four men and ten women-- have been competing with each other for the last ten weeks to raise the most money for LLS. In its fourth year, the event raised a record $575,000, more than $100,000 more than last year’s event.

Victoria Slocum, creator of the website Green Plate, was named the 2012 Woman of the Year. James Beasley, Regional Manager at First Communities Management, was named the 2012 Man of the Year.  The Woman of the Year runner up was Rebecca Glasgow, and the Man of the Year runner up was Peter Pearce.

“We were pleased to recruit such an outstanding class of candidates for this campaign. While only two people are crowned the Man & Woman of the Year and we inducted ten into the $25K for the Cure Club. We are so proud of all of our candidates because of their extraordinary job they did in making this campaign such a tremendous success. We counted on their creativity and ingenuity to raise the funds, and they performed brilliantly,” said Tracy Manning, manager of the campaign at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Georgia Chapter.

This year, Bill Price won the Mission Award; the award to the candidate that demonstrated exceptional mission integration into their campaign. Ellie Chin was awarded the Community Award; the award to the candidate that facilitated exposure in the community and built a strong program and team.

Every dollar the candidates raised counted as one “vote” and the candidates with the most votes were given the title Man & Woman of the Year. Woman of the Year Victoria Slocum and Man of the Year James Beasley will now be entered into the national competition for Man & Woman of the Year, which will be named in July.  All the candidates competed in honor of LLS’s Boy & Girl of the Year, Owen and Preslie, local children who are blood cancer survivors and sources of inspiration to others.
