Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestras of Atlanta Expands Add New Philharmonia Orchestra

JUNE 23, 2015

MYSO Expands to Add a New Philharmonia Orchestra

After completing its 25th anniversary season this past May, MYSO will be expanding its String Orchestra into the MYSO Philharmonia. The new group will include qualified string players, (violin, viola, cello and bass), as well as woodwinds, brass and percussion to form a full Symphony Orchestra.

“The creation of MYSO Philharmonia gives younger musicians a wonderful opportunity to perform in a full orchestra setting,” said Christopher Thibdeau, Music Director for MYSO. “We are looking forward to the coming year with the addition of this second orchestra.”

Jacques Murphy, MYSO Chairman of the Board said, “MYSO had a fantastic 25th anniversary season, also Mr. Thibdeau’s inaugural season, and we are excited to be offering this new format to the young musicians in the Atlanta area. With recent cutbacks to arts opportunity, we feel that MYSO will be able to help these musicians to expand their musical education.”

Conductor Tamara Dworetz will be leading the newly formed MYSO Philharmonia. “We are grateful that our exhaustive search has concluded with great success,” said Mr. Murphy. “MYSO is proud to bring Ms. Dworetz to the podium to lead the Philharmonia. She is a gifted, thoughtful, highly accomplished and talented musician.  We’re excited to welcome her and to watch MYSO grow to new heights.”

Tamara Dworetz also serves as the Director of Orchestras at Lakeside High School. She graduated cum laude from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music with a Bachelor of Music Education dual degree in winds and strings, and a minor in instrumental conducting.

“I am delighted to be joining MYSO this Fall,” said Ms. Dworetz. “I am proud to say that I was once a MYSO musician myself. The experience that is offered to these musicians is one that they will treasure their entire lives. The Philharmonia will provide a much needed opportunity for younger musicians to be able to play in a full orchestra. I look forward to a great first season.”
