Atlanta Falcons Open Applications for Schools to Join NFL PLAY 60 FitnessGram Campaign
February 18, 2016 – As part of the NFL PLAY 60 initiative, the Atlanta Falcons are looking for up to 35 elementary and middle schools in Georgia to become NFL Play 60 FitnessGram partners and lead the Falcons statewide commitment to improve youth fitness.
Schools selected as Falcons NFL Play 60 FitnessGram partners will participate in a September 2016 kickoff event and receive booster training on FitnessGram. Partner schools will also be featured at a spring 2017 event celebrating the most creative approaches to improving youth fitness. Partner schools will be eligible to receive $2,000 worth of sports and fitness equipment in spring 2017, and the Atlanta Falcons will also offer additional rewards.
“Physical activity is associated with better physical health, better school attendance and improved academic outcomes for students,” said Chris Millman, Director of Atlanta Falcons Community Relations. “These 35 Play 60 FitnessGram partner schools will help lead Georgia youth to a healthier, stronger future.”
By showcasing the work of these partner schools, the Atlanta Falcons will provide models for educators across the state to adapt for use in their own communities.
FitnessGram is the official physical fitness assessment of Georgia Shape, Governor Deal’s initiative to improve youth health and wellness across the state. As part of Georgia Shape, more than 1 million students already participate in FitnessGram assessments annually. Falcons NFL Play 60 FitnessGram partner schools will assess student fitness in both the fall and spring, enabling them to track changes during the year, and will pursue innovative ways to increase the time students spend in physical activity each day.
“These 35 partnerships will go a long way toward improving fitness in our children”, said Brenda Fitzgerald, M.D., commissioner, Georgia Department of Public Health. “We must work together to teach our children the lifelong benefits of physical activity, lessons they hopefully will carry with them throughout their lives.”
