"4 Questions Journalist Spotlight" with Atlanta Tribune's Katrice Mines

Leff's Atlanta Media's Weekly Feature Conversation with an Atlanta Journalist

Each week, in partnership with Leff’s Atlanta Media (www.leffsatlantamedia.com), Atlanta Daybook presents our "Journalist Spotlight." Mitch Leff offers a conversation with a journalist in the Atlanta market, asking them four questions that'll help you learn more about local Atlanta media. What makes them tick? What's new at their media outlet? What drives them?

This week we’re talking with Katrice L. Mines, who is celebrating her tenth year as editor of Atlanta Tribune magazine, a business lifestyle magazine that focuses on the accomplishments of Atlanta’s black business and community leaders. A passionate advocate for community involvement, before editing the Atlanta Tribune Katrice was executive director of a Big Brothers Big Sisters agency. She’s been named one of EBONY magazine’s 30 Leaders Under 30 and has been featured in forums including The Economist and NPR’s “News and Notes.” In addition to her day job of magazine editor, in her free time she runs the successful “My Vicarious Lyfe” lifestyle blog.

What kind of story makes you proud to be a journalist?
A story that I know a reader can take and utilize beyond just general information, but content that empowers and causes movement.

What’s new and exciting about the Atlanta Tribune?
We recently launched a digital issue that is a complete online edition that replicates our print issue. We are excited to be expanding our reach outside of this region with more of our monthly offerings than our daily blog and social media activity. Our print issue is packed with content that is useful to virtually any reader trying to move forward in their career, business or entrepreneurial pursuit anywhere – not just in metro Atlanta.

What’s the best and worst thing about your job?
The best thing is absolutely doing what I love in terms of writing and research, and community empowerment. I am able to use my mind in a way that I believe will allow me to contribute something that will outlive me.

The worst thing is that I am very passionate about the work I do, so I can be protective of our editorial work to a fault at times. I don’t want the integrity of our editorial mission and what comes of our pursuit to be compromised. In the changing media world, it’s a constant struggle.

What’s the coolest thing people should know about you?
I can hula hoop for 12 minutes straight.

About Katrice:

  • Last Book Read: "Good Morning, Mr. Mandela" by Zelda la Grange
  • Favorite Atlanta Restaurant: The Green Manor
  • Favorite Guilty Pleasure: Visits to the ice cream shops in my hometown in Ohio. They all sell ice cream from the local dairy (farm) Toft’s, and there is nothing like it.
  • Local Getaway: Lake Acworth Beach nearly every Friday
  • Favorite Non-Work Hobby: Documentary watching. I’m completely obsessed.
