"4 Questions" Journalist Spotlight with Dana Barrett of biz 1190 AM WAFS

Leff's Atlanta Media's Weekly Feature Conversation with an Atlanta Journalist

Each week, in partnership with Leff’s Atlanta Media (www.leffsatlantamedia.com), Atlanta Daybook presents our "Journalist Spotlight." Mitch Leff offers a conversation with a journalist in the Atlanta market, asking them four questions that'll help you learn more about local Atlanta media. What makes them tick? What's new at their media outlet? What drives them?

Dana Barrett is the host of The Dana Barrett Show on biz 1190 AM WAFS, weekdays from 9-11 am. She is also a sought-after talent in the Atlanta business community as a business commentator and speaker. Her talents do not end there, since Dana is also a social critic, TV host, actress and stand-up comic. We recently had the opportunity to ask Dana Barrett four questions… here are her answers!

What kind of story makes you proud to be a journalist?

I love to go beyond the headlines and the rhetoric and go for the deeper understanding of a topic. It makes me proud to be able to dig into something and get the audience to the heart of it. Most of my listeners are busy and don’t have time to do the research, so if I can serve them by quickly getting them the key info – I’m all about it.

News doesn’t have to be all negative. Our businesses, non-profits and entrepreneurs and all those that support them are doing amazing things every day and I’m proud that people tune in to hear the good stuff.

What’s new and exciting for the Dana Barrett Show or for Dana Barrett?
Well – first of all The Dana Barrett Show just went from one hour a day to two... so that’s exciting. More guests, more headlines, more soapboxes and more fun! I’m also working on a couple of new TV projects for the national stage that will highlight Atlanta and the business and tech topics that affect our daily lives (in my usual sassy way, of course!).

What's the best and worst thing about your job?
I have the best job in the entire world. I get to meet 10-20 incredible people every week and help them showcase what they’re doing. PLUS, I get to entertain, inform and connect with my listeners every day. What could be better? I’ve had (ahem) several other careers – but this is the dream career.

The worst thing about my job is probably just that there aren’t enough hours in the day. I want to say yes to every coffee or lunch meeting and I want to say yes to every offer to speak or to emcee a panel or a conference ... but there just aren’t enough hours to do all that and put on a great show every day!

What’s the coolest thing people should know about you?
There are so many cool things about me ... do I really have to pick one? (Kidding!)
Hmmmm... well I used to own an independent bookstore, so there’s that. I’ve done stand-up comedy, so there’s that ... oh, and I play Reporter #4 in a new Ang Lee movie that will be out in 2016!

About Dana:

  • Last Book Read: I read 4-5 books a month. Just finishing Ted Koppel’s “Lights Out.”
  • Favorite Atlanta Restaurant: Ooooh – hard to pick one. For pizza, Varasano’s in Buckhead – great food and great service. For fancy schmancy I like St. Cecilia. And for lunch I gotta go with Seasons 52 in Buckhead – I do all my lunch meetings there.
  • Favorite Guilty Pleasure: Reality TV Competition Shows – America’s Got Talent, Project Runway, America’s Next Top Model ... if someone has a shot at changing their life and getting their dream career... I’m in. Oh, and I plan to get famous enough to be on Dancing with the Stars one of these days!
  • Local Getaway: Who has time? I’d love a good spa getaway. I’m open to suggestions!
  • Favorite Non-Work Hobby: Who has time? Haha! I guess I’d say running. Before breast cancer, I was winning 5Ks in my age category, and now 3 years later, I think my times are competitive again, though I haven’t actually raced in awhile!
