"4 Questions Journalist Spotlight" with Sports Tech & Sports Travel Reporter Rick Limpert

Leff's Atlanta Media's Weekly Feature Conversation with an Atlanta Journalist

Each week, in partnership with Leff’s Atlanta Media (www.leffsatlantamedia.com), Atlanta Daybook presents our "Journalist Spotlight." Mitch Leff offers a conversation with a journalist in the Atlanta market, asking them four questions that'll help you learn more about local Atlanta media. What makes them tick? What's new at their media outlet? What drives them?

This week we’re talking with sports tech writer Rick Limpert. Part of a new breed of journalists who have turned a niche into a career, Rick has been named the No. 1 sports tech writer in the country on two occasions.  He writes a daily column for his own site, WirelessWednesday.live, and contributes regularly to CBS Atlanta, Everything Georgia, AJC and others.

For years, he so-hosted the weekly tech and gadget radio segments on 92.9 DaveFM/The Game and SiriusXm PGA Tour Radio. He appears with Sully on iHeartRadio and Radio 105.7.com each week as they talk about the world of technology.

Rick is also the co-author or the best-selling tennis book, “The Invaluable Experience” and the sports travel book, “The Fam Trip Field Guide.” He contributes to various websites, NBA.com, Omni Hotel's Experiences Magazine, Ritz-Carlton's and Reynolds Lake Oconee's in-room magazine and Innovation & Tech Today.

You'll find him on NBC 11Alive, FOX 5, CBS 46 "Atlanta Plugged In" and on CBS 13 WMAZ in Macon reporting on the latest in sports gadgets and tech. He also provides event coverage and helps run media rooms around the country- serving as the Media and Communications Manager for the BB&T Atlanta Open each summer and the W.L. Amos Sr. Tennis Classic each fall. He was awarded the USTA Georgia and USTA Southern, Marc Kaplan Media Excellence Award in 2014.

He's a busy guy, writing more than 800 pieces a year, so you are sure to have read something he's written. He lives in Woodstock, Georgia, with his wife Lindsay and their 4-year-old dachshund, Pearl.

What kind of story makes you proud to be a journalist?

Something that brings a smile to someone's face or adds some levity to their day. If I can help a reader, listener or viewer with a technology issue, or a tip to help them cut through the ever changing world of technology we live in, I've done my job! Sports + technology = fun!

What's new and different about what you're doing?

I'm living and local proof that one can turn a passion into a career. I worked in corporate America for over 10 years and couldn't imagine going back to a 9-5 work schedule. Combining my love of sports, technology and travel, I created a niche that many didn't know existed. I love covering the people, places and things that nobody else wants to cover. Uncovering that "diamond in the rough" product or unique place is what I'm always looking for when it comes to my next or upcoming story.

What is the best and worst thing about your job?

I know I have a pretty good gig. Yes, I kind of get to pick and choose what I write about, but I get to visit cool places, meet interesting people and attend some of the most exciting events in the world. I get privileged access to what's "coming soon" in the technology world, but it's really about the people I get to deal with on a daily basis. Every day is different and presents different challenges and opportunities. There really isn't a bad thing ... other than sometimes it's even hard for me to keep up with how fast the world keeps changing.

What’s the coolest thing people should know about you?

Even though I travel a lot, I'm more of a homebody. According to my wife, I work too much. I spend time on my couch or in my man cave with my dog watching one of the 800 or so channels I have on DISH Network or watching Youtube videos. I guess I collect sports memorabilia. People give me things because they know I have quite a collection, but I always pick up something from the events I attend or places I go.

I come from a tennis family and was once a ranked player in both Wisconsin and Iowa. My dad was a state champion player, my sister played D-I tennis and my mom used to coach high school tennis and chauffeur us around.

About You

  • Last Book Read: Tiger Woods’ new memoir, The 1997 Masters: My Story
  • Favorite Atlanta Restaurant: In Roswell, there is the best Peruvian street food this side of Lima. It's good, it's simple and it's called, The Freakin Incan, and the chef plays tennis.
  • Favorite Guilty Pleasure: Watching American Pickers on the History Channel and listening to 70s and 80s music.
  • Local Getaway: We love Reynolds Lake Oconee in Oconee County, just east of Metro Atlanta. They have a lake, golf courses and the Ritz-Carlton Lodge.
  • Favorite Non-Work Hobby: Collecting game-worn and unique autographed sports memorabilia. I have so much stuff now, I have to rotate the collection on display since my wife limits it to just one room.
