"4 Questions Journalist Spotlight" with AJC Feature Writer Helena Oliviero

Leff's Atlanta Media's Weekly Feature Conversation with an Atlanta Journalist

Each week, in partnership with Leff’s Atlanta Media (www.leffsatlantamedia.com), Atlanta Daybook presents our "Journalist Spotlight." Mitch Leff offers a conversation with a journalist in the Atlanta market, asking them four questions that'll help you learn more about local Atlanta media. What makes them tick? What's new at their media outlet? What drives them?

This week we’re talking with Atlanta Journal-Constitution feature writer Helena Oliviero. Her specialty is writing compelling feature stories with health, relationship and lifestyle themes. Over the last 15 years, Oliviero has written nearly 20 Personal Journeys, an award-winning AJC series spotlighting extraordinary individuals in our community.

She grew up in Vermont and graduated from the University of San Francisco. Before joining the AJC in 2002, she worked as a foreign correspondent in Mexico for Knight-Ridder. She lives in Avondale Estates with her husband Brian and two daughters.

What kind of story makes you proud to be a journalist?
I love writing human interest stories about inspiring, fascinating people in our community - people who are kind and good, and making a difference in people’s lives – i.e. the caring MARTA bus driver who looks after his passengers, the local attorney who helped an elderly man in desperate need of a clean, safe, apartment – and also companionship; the Atlanta couple who moved to Costa Rica and returned with life-changing careers and a passion to make the world a better place with chocolate.

What's new and different about what you're doing with the AJC?
I am trying new ways telling stories through photography, videos and social media. I love learning new skills and trying innovative ways to tell a story.

What is the best and worst thing about your job?
The best part of my job is meeting and connecting with people and telling their stories. I am grateful that people trust me with their stories, and I want to tell these stories well.

The worst part of my job is probably the sometimes-long commute to Dunwoody and unpredictable hours!

What’s the coolest thing people should know about you?
Growing up in Vermont, my dad always insisted we trek to Burlington (about 40 minutes from home) for an ice cream treat. He said the best ice cream in the world was at this shop in an old gas station run by these guys named Ben & Jerry – way before they hit the big time. It was worth the drive!
