"4 Questions Journalist Spotlight" with Travis Taylor of Wanderlust Atlanta

Leff's Atlanta Media's Weekly Feature Conversation with an Atlanta Journalist

Each week, in partnership with Leff’s Atlanta Media (www.leffsatlantamedia.com), Atlanta Daybook presents our "Journalist Spotlight." PR professional Mitch Leff offers a conversation with a journalist in the Atlanta market, asking them four questions that'll help you learn more about local Atlanta media. What makes them tick? What's new at their media outlet? What drives them?

This week we're talking with Travis S. Taylor, founder and author of wanderlust ATLANTA, an Atlanta lifestyle blog for tourists, visiting and local. Approaching its seventh anniversary, Travis launched wanderlust ATLANTA when he moved back to Atlanta after nine years in Washington, D.C. He shares that he learned more about Atlanta in one year of authoring wanderlust ATLANTA than he did in the 15 years of living in Atlanta the first time.

He says, "My ultimate goal is to generate excitement for all Atlanta has to offer and to motivate locals to get out and explore their own back yards, instead of only playing 'tourist' when friends or family come to visit and then only going to the same three sites you always do. Get out and explore. Learn your city. Share with others what we have to offer. Be proud of Atlanta!"

Travis holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Technology Management, with a minor in Web Graphic Design; was a Radioman in the U.S. Navy; and is a Corporate Communications professional with more than 15 years experience in the luxury food-service and satellite communications industries.

What kind of story makes you proud to be a journalist?

I especially love when I hear, "I didn't know about that and I've lived here all my life." As an Atlanta tourism writer, I love the stories that surprise, whether the surprise is for the reader who might be discovering an Atlanta destination they've never visited or an aspect of Atlanta history they did not yet know.

I love it when the surprise is for me me in the form of unexpected engagement from readers. Writing for a niche audience, while informing a greater audience is extremely rewarding. The mainstream is fun and important to write about, but bringing light to the relatively unknown or yet to be discovered is the greatest fun for me.

What's news and different about what you're doing at wanderlust ATLANTA?

One of the exciting things about exploring Atlanta is that there is always something new. I'm currently working on a few series—I love a theme! One is a restaurant series, "By the Numbers", that features restaurants with numbers in their name. And I'm doing another series that chronicles the beginnings of the newest location of The Cook's Warehouse, from construction to grand opening.

I've also started a book that will feature Atlanta's not-yet-famous attractions, as well as hidden gems within our most popular tourist destinations.

What is the best and worst thing about your job?

The best thing about writing wanderlust ATLANTA is that it keeps me continually exploring Atlanta and nearby destinations. It's a new city every day! I learned more in one year after starting wanderlust ATLANTA when I moved back in 2010 than I did in the 15 years I lived here the first time!

The worst thing is the "cutting room floor." It's the fact that there aren't enough hours in the day to write about everything I want to write about. That's where the focus on niche writing comes to the rescue.

What’s the coolest thing people should know about you?

Since my earliest childhood memories I've been a science-fiction and space enthusiast. Here are some of my most cherished memories in those genres: I met Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock) in 2002 at the National Press Club, and I've walked under the belly of Space Shuttle Endeavour. I've met a number of American astronauts, and stood next to a Proton rocket on its launch pad at the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

I've dined with Elon Musk at a table with several distinguished scientists, and I'll never forget the sage advice gifted to me by Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura) when I met her: "Never do anything that doesn't bring joy to your life."

About Travis:

  • Last Book Read: "Prohibition in Atlanta" by Ron Smith and Mary O. Boyle
  • Favorite Atlanta Restaurant: You can't have just one favorite restaurant in this city! Most recently my favorites are 5Church Atlanta and TWO urban licks, as well as brunch at Nine Mile Station!
  • Favorite Guilty Pleasure: Meeting celebrities. Whether a brilliant actor at a local community theatre or the star of the latest cinema blockbuster. I find so many to be gracious, warm, and inspiring. This year, 2017, will be my 8th Dragon Con, which always has a fantastic celebrity lineup!
  • Local Getaway: Savannah, the epitome of Southern Hospitality, is a longtime favorite. Most recently I stayed at The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort on St. Simons Island. Both are magical and their culinary experiences are exceptional.
  • Favorite Non-Work Hobby: My favorite non-work hobby is actually part of what I do for work...Photography. I've had a camera at my side for more than 30 years and can't imagine ever being without one. I love the creative process of taking photos; the "ooohs" and "aaahs" people share when they see them; and the strolls down memory lane that they take me on years later.
