Channel 2 WSB-TV, Atlanta's #1 TV Station Grows to 62% of News Audience in June Sweeps

Channel 2 WSB-TV dominated the viewing in the Atlanta market throughout the day, continuing its long run as the #1 local news. Channel 2 Action News won every newscast, often drawing more audience than the combined competition. All together the station’s newscasts attracted 62% of the local news audience over the rating period. That more than doubled #2 WAGA with 27%. WXIA attracted 6%, WGCL 5% and WATL 1%.

The ABC Affiliate ranked #1 in 21 ½ hours in Adults 25-54 during the average weekday of the June rating period.

June 2017 BY THE NUMBERS        

Over half (57%) of Atlanta local morning news viewers woke up to “Channel 2 Action News This Morning” from 4:30-7 a.m. in June, drawing 36% more viewers than the competition combined and 69% more viewers than #2 WAGA.  

“Good Morning America” once again ranked as Atlanta’s #1 morning news/entertainment program. It out-delivered NBC’s “Today Show” by 233% while it beat WAGA’s “Good Day Atlanta” by 43%.

“Channel 2 Action News at Noon“ doubled the viewers of #2 WAGA, and out-delivered the competition combined by 56%.

In the Early Evening News, Channel 2 Action News continued to dominate the other local news stations.

  • At 4 p.m., Channel 2 Action News grew 44% over May 2017, up 18% over June 2016 and ranked over five times higher than WGCL, the CBS Affiliate.
  • At 5 p.m., Channel 2 Action News grew 29% over May 2017 and attracted 38% more audience than #2 WAGA.
  • At 6 p.m., Channel 2 Action News out-delivered the combined competition, grew by 14% over May 2017, was up year-over-year, and drew 71% more audience than #2 WAGA.

ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” at 7 p.m. grew by 33% over May 2016 and ranked as the #1 rated weekday program on any local affiliate at any time period. It beat NBC and CBS national news combined by almost three times. ABC World News out ranked “NBC Nightly News” by 220% and was 16 times greater than “CBS Evening News.”

In Network Prime Time, ABC on WSB-TV grew by 43% over May 2017 and attracted over 200% more audience that both FOX on WAGA and NBC on WXIA. ABC secured seven times the audience as did CBS on WGCL.

The Channel 2 Action News Nightbeat won the 11 p.m. news by 69% over #2 WAGA, Monday-Friday while growing over May 2017.

“Jimmy Kimmel Live” continued his domination of Late Night talk shows growing by 25% over May 2017, and beating the competition combined with 114% more viewers. Kimmel attained 275% more viewers than “The Tonight Show” on NBC and four times the viewers than “The Late Show” on CBS.

The following weekday programs also ranked #1 on WSB-TV: “Live with Kelly & Ryan,” “The View,” “The Chew,” “General Hospital,” “ABC Nightline” and “Right this Minute.”

“Channel 2 Action News Saturday Morning,” 6-9 a.m. outdistanced #2 WAGA by 183% and beat the combined competition by 89%.

“Channel 2 Action News Sunday Morning,” 6-8 a.m. and 9-11 a.m. drew three times the audience of #2 WAGA and beat the competition combined by 36%.

The station’s Digital reach in combined Mobile Web, App and Desktop use grew enormously in year-over-year performance:
•  Page Views across all digital platforms grew by 55%.
•  Monthly Visits grew by 35%.
•  Video Plays grew by 70%.

SOCIAL REPORT           
The station’s Social reach grew and its social accounts rank #1 in Atlanta TV with:
•  1,350,000 Facebook Fans, a growth of 26% over June 2016.
•  975,000 Twitter Followers, up 129% over June 2016.

Georgia’s 6th Congressional District Candidates Live Debate Rated #1 on Channel 2 WSB-TV

On June 6th, the attention of the nation focused on Channel 2 WSB-TV for the only live prime time debate in the race for the 6th district. Months of careful negotiations secured the two candidates just two weeks prior to when they took the stage.

Justin Farmer, anchor for Channel 2 Action News, moderated the debate between Republican contender Karen Handell and Democratic hopeful Jon Ossoff.

Channel 2 produced and hosted the debate out of its Midtown Studio. Dozens of journalists from around the country attended, live blogging and filing for such national publications such as CNN, The Washington Post, Boston Globe, Telemundo and Politico.

Channel 2 teamed with News 95.5FM and AM750 WSB and The Atlanta Journal Constitution for panelists and questions for the candidates. The station also partnered with other Cox Media Group properties, including Rare, Rare Politics and Mundo Hispanico, to share its Facebook Live and digital streams. WSB Radio aired a simulcast of the program.

The Debate by the Numbers
221,000 people watched the debate on Channel 2 making it the #1 program from 8-9 p.m.
Highlights of the integrated digital multiplatform project were:

  • #WSBdebate had a reach of 166 million
  • 52,000 livestream views and 99,000 video plays across
  • WSB-TV’s Facebook Live reached 700,000 people with nearly 200,000 views.
  • 16 debate-related Facebook posts each have reached more than 3.2 million people over the station’s main account.
  • #WSBdebate was the top trending hashtag in Atlanta for more than 6 hours. The local hashtag trended in several major cities around the country including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Seattle. It was used 19,000 times reaching 166,000 people.
  • The station’s YouTube channel trended on Tuesday night and had 132,000 views in 15 hours.
