Atlanta Falcons Host NFL Flag Football Training and Announce New Grant Funding Opportunity

ATLANTA (8.25.17) – As part of NFL Flag Football Week, today the Atlanta Falcons are hosting a statewide training program and announcing a new funding opportunity to help Georgia groups increase the number of children participating in flag football.

Through the new initiative, Rise Up! 159, the Falcons have donated NFL Flag Football kits to a school in every one of Georgia’s 159 counties. Today, the Falcons are bringing together P.E. teachers from the 159 partner schools for a half-day training program. During the 2017-18 school year, the teachers will use NFL Flag Football curricula to increase the time children spend in physical activity. The initiative will reach more than 30,000 boys and girls in Georgia schools.

In addition, the Falcons are joining with Georgia Shape, Gov. Deal’s statewide initiative to address childhood obesity, launching a two-year grant program to expand NFL Flag Football participation statewide. The Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation has awarded a $242,000 grant to Georgia Shape to fund projects across the state.

The Rise Up! 159 grants will help youth football leagues, after-school providers and schools start new NFL Flag Football programs and enhance existing programs. Grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded on a competitive basis. The Falcons and Georgia Shape are especially interested in projects that start new NFL Flag Football leagues and projects that increase participation among girls and children with physical disabilities. NFL Flag Football is open to all boys and girls ages 6 to 14.

To learn how to apply, organizations should visit www.GeorgiaShape.org.

In the official proclamation designating the week of August 21 as NFL Flag Football Week in Georgia, Gov. Deal recognized that NFL Flag Football participation has increased 19 percent annually since 2011, and over the past two years the Falcons have trained 400 P.E. teachers in 9 school districts to implement the NFL Flag Football curriculum.

A new web site, www.RiseUp159.org, includes a map with information about the 159 school partners as well as future funding opportunities.

About Georgia Shape
Georgia Shape is the Governor’s statewide, multi-agency and multi-dimensional initiative that brings together governmental, philanthropic, academic and business communities to address childhood (0-18) obesity in Georgia. Georgia Shape was launched in 2012 by the Georgia Department of Public Health and includes strategies for addressing obesity from birth through age 18 involving statewide, coordinated efforts with targeted communication strategies and multiple partnerships among other state government agencies, private foundations, healthcare providers, professional athletic teams, and private companies. Efforts focus on schools, communities, child care centers, government and policy agencies, businesses, hospitals, and medical practices.

About the Georgia Department of Public Health
The Georgia Department of Public Health is the lead agency in preventing disease, injury and disability; promoting health and well-being; and preparing for and responding to disasters from a health perspective. In 2011, the General Assembly restored DPH to its own state agency after more than 30 years of consolidation with other departments. At the state level, DPH functions through numerous divisions, sections, programs and offices. Locally, DPH funds and collaborates with Georgia’s 159 county health departments and 18 public health districts. Through the changes, the mission has remained constant – to protect the lives of all Georgians. Today, DPH’s main functions include: Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, Maternal and Child Health, Infectious Disease and Immunization, Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Emergency Preparedness and Response, Emergency Medical Services, Pharmacy, Nursing, Volunteer Health Care, the Office of Health Equity, Vital Records, and the State Public Health Laboratory. For more information about DPH, visit www.dph.ga.gov.
