Which Local TV Station Delivered 61% of the News Audience During October Sweeps

(ATLANTA, November 6, 2017) Channel 2 WSB-TV dominated the viewing in the Atlanta market throughout the day, continuing its long run as the #1 local. Channel 2 Action News won every head-to-head newscast, drawing more audience than the combined competition at 4:30 a.m., 5:00 a.m., 5:30 a.m. 6:00 a.m., noon, 4:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. All together the station’s newscasts attracted 61% of the local news audience over the rating period. That distance nearly tripled #2 WAGA with 22%. WXIA attracted 9%, WGCL 6% and WPCH 1%.

Channel 2 WSB-TV ranked #1 in 21 hours of the average day, Monday - Friday during the October 2017 Sweep.

Sixty percent of Atlanta local morning news viewers continued to wake up to “Channel 2 Action News This Morning” from 4:30-7 a.m. in October. The Early Morning Newscasts drew 48% more viewers than the competition combined.

Channel 2 Action News “This Morning at 6 a.m.” out-delivered the combined audiences of WAGA, WXIA, and WGCL by 48%.

Once again, “Good Morning America,” was Atlanta’s #1 morning news and entertainment program. The two-hour program out-delivered NBC’s “Today Show” by 440% more viewers and beat WAGA’s “Good Day Atlanta” by 93%.

Channel 2 Action News at Noon out-delivered #2 WAGA by 183% and drew 89% more than the competition combined.

In the Early Evening News, Channel 2 Action News continued to dominate the other local news stations.

  • At 4 p.m., Channel 2 Action News delivered more than five times the audience of WGCL, the CBS Affiliate with head-to-head news at 4 p.m. 
  • At 5 p.m., Channel 2 Action News equaled the audience of the combined competition and out-delivered #2 WAGA by 67%. 
  • At 6 p.m., Channel 2 Action News delivered 25% more viewers than the combined competition and out-delivered #2 WAGA by 108%. 

ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” at 7 p.m. continued its ranking as the #1 rated weekday program on any local affiliate in any time period. It more than doubled the combined audiences of NBC and CBS national news. ABC News out ranked “NBC Nightly News” by 209% and was more than 10 times greater than “CBS Evening News.”

“Entertainment Tonight” at 7:30 p.m. delivered 41% more viewers than each of the two competing shows tied for second: “Jeopardy” and “TMZ.”

ABC was the #1 Prime time network in Atlanta.

Channel 2 Action News Nightbeat at 11 p.m. out-ranked #2 WAGA with 92% more audience, Monday-Friday.

The following weekday programs also ranked #1 on WSB-TV: “Live with Kelly & Ryan,” “The View,” “The Chew,” “General Hospital,” “ABC Nightline” and “The Doctors.”

“Channel 2 Action News Saturday Morning,” 6-9 a.m., grew over October 2016, outdistancing #2 WAGA with three times the viewers and doubling the combined competition.

“Channel 2 Action News Sunday Morning,” 6-8 a.m. and 9-11 a.m. drew 143% more audience than #2 WAGA and 31% more than the combined competition.


October DIGITAL and SOCIAL REPORT
Channel 2’s digital platforms continued steady growth year to year across all channels.

  • Digital Visits UP 15%
  • Digital Page Views UP 27%
  • Video Plays UP 45%

On Facebook, the station’s page grew by 30% over last year to 1,438,369 Likes.

Channel 2’s Twitter station page continues its rapid growth with a 75% increase year to year. The station almost doubled its following over last year, growing to 1,085,203 followers.
