"4 Questions Journalist Spotlight" with the Atlanta Constitution's Gracie Bonds Staples

Leff's Atlanta Media's Weekly Feature Conversation with an Atlanta Journalist

"Each week, in partnership with Leff’s Atlanta Media (www.leffsatlantamedia.com), Atlanta Daybook presents our "Journalist Spotlight." Atlanta public relations professional Mitch Leff of Leff & Associates offers a conversation with a journalist in the Atlanta market, asking them four questions that'll help you learn more about local Atlanta media. What makes them tick? What's new at their media outlet? What drives them?

Mitch also operates Mitch’s Media Match, a service that connects Atlanta journalists with local experts.

The Spotlight Shines on Gracie Bonds Staples!

This week, we’re talking with Gracie Bonds Staples, writer of the “This Life with Gracie” column in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution where she offers her perspective on lifestyle issues. Gracie’s been at the AJC for 17 years, after working at several other newspapers, including the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the Sacramento Bee.

When Gracie started at the AJC in 2000, it was to cover health issues, but she’s covered schools and other general assignment beats, and written several “Personal Journeys,” longer features that appear each Sunday in the paper.

What kind of story makes you proud to be a journalist?

Any story that inspires, uplifts or has the potential to make a difference in the lives of people. If it does all those things, even better. (Send her story ideas at gstaples@ajc.com!)

Editor’s Note: I think the best way to know her is to read a few of her recent columns:

  • Justice for the Rev. Otis Byrd Sr.; a new beginning for his namesake
  • What is nonviolent domestic abuse?
  • What if developmental disabilities get between you and playing ball?

What’s new and different about what you’re doing?

Social media!

What is the best and worst thing about your job?

The best part of my job is meeting the people I write about, telling their stories and striking the right tone. The worst part is finding new and interesting ways to tell those stories.

What’s the coolest thing people should know about you?

A community service award is given in my name by the non-profit Dallas/Fort Worth Birthing Project which I founded.
