Channel 2 WSB-TV Delivered 52 Percent of the News Audience in February Sweeps

The February Sweep period ended on Wednesday, February 28, 2018. Channel 2 WSB-TV, a Cox Media Group station,dominated the Atlanta market in viewing audience. The Atlanta ABC affiliate ranked #1 overall and the #1 local news.

Channel 2 Action News won every head-to-head newscast, drawing more audience than the combined news competition at 4:30, 5, 5:30 and 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. It equaled the competition at noon.

All together the station’s newscasts attracted 52% of the local news audience over the rating period. Channel 2 Action Newsdoubled #2 WAGA, which attracted26% of the local news audience. WXIA climbed from fourth to third place in the market with 15% of the local news audience. The increase was sparked by 17 straight nights of Winter Olympic prime time programming leading in to the NBC affiliate’s late news. WGCL fell to fourth and averaged 6% of the news viewers.

FEBRUARY BY THE NUMBERS

Channel 2 WSB-TV ranked #1 in 18 hours of the average weekday, Monday-Friday, during the February 2018 Sweep.

Fifty-seven percent of Atlanta’s local morning news viewers woke up to “Channel 2 Action News This Morning” from 4:30-7 a.m. in February. The early morning newscasts more than doubled the viewers of #2 WAGA and generated 31% more viewers than the competition combined.  

“Channel 2 Action News This Morning” at 6 a.m. alone out-delivered the combined audiences of WAGA, WXIA, and WGCL by 13% anddoubled the viewers of #2 WAGA.

ABC’s “Good Morning America” continued to reign as Atlanta’s #1 morning news and entertainment program. The two-hour program out-delivered NBC’s “Today Show” with three timesmore viewers and beat WAGA’s “Good Day Atlanta” by 44%.

Channel 2 Action News at Noon drew 27% more than the competition combined while it out-delivered #2 WAGA by 75%.

In the Early Evening News, Channel 2 Action News continued to dominate the other local news stations.

  • At 4 p.m., Channel 2 Action News delivered over four times the audience of WGCL, the lone local news competitor at 4 p.m.
  • At 5 p.m., Channel 2 Action News out-delivered #2 WAGA by 45%.
  • At 6 p.m., Channel 2 Action Newswas the highest rated newscast in the market, growing by 13% over 2017 while WAGA declined by 17%. The station delivered 17% more viewers than the combined competition and more than doubled the viewers of #2 WAGA.

ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” at 7 p.m., delivered almost three times the combined audience of NBC and CBS’s national news programs.

“Entertainment Tonight” at 7:30 p.m. delivered two times the viewers of “TMZ” on WAGA and 47% more audience than Olympic Zone on WXIA.

“The Channel 2 Action News Nightbeat at 11 p.m.” out-delivered #2 WXIA by 33%, even with the NBC affiliate’s Olympic prime time ratings lead-in. Channel 2 also dominated WAGA, which came in third behind WXIA, with 54% more audience, Monday-Friday.

“Channel 2 Action News Saturday Morning,” 6-9 a.m. delivered 40% more viewers than #2 WAGA.

“Channel 2 Action News Sunday Morning,” 6-8 a.m. and 9-11 a.m. beat the competition combined and drew 114% more audience than #2 WAGA.

The following weekday programs also ranked #1 on WSB-TV: “ABC World News Now,” “America This Morning,”Live with Kelly & Ryan,” “The View,” “The Chew,” “General Hospital,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “ABC Nightline,” “Daily Mail” and “The Doctors.” All in all, Channel 2 won 18 hours of the day.

FEBRUARY SOCIAL REPORT                

Channel 2’s social platforms continued steady growth year to year across all channels.

On Facebook, the station’s page, now with 1,460,000 Fans, grew by 17% in “Likes” over last year. 

On Twitter, Channel 2’s Twitter station page, now with 1,143,000 Followers, continues its rapid growth with a 39% increase in followers over this time last February.
