"4 Questions Journalist Spotlight" on Jennifer Parker, CrossRoadsNews

Leff's Atlanta Media's Weekly Feature Conversation with an Atlanta Journalist

Each week, in partnership with Leff’s Atlanta Media (www.leffsatlantamedia.com), Atlanta Daybook presents our "Journalist Spotlight." Atlanta public relations professional Mitch Leff of Leff & Associates offers a conversation with a journalist in the Atlanta market, asking them four questions that'll help you learn more about local Atlanta media. What makes them tick? What's new at their media outlet? What drives them?

Mitch also operates Leff’s Atlanta Media (http://www.leffsatlantamedia.com) an online database with contact info for thousands of Atlanta-based journalists, and Mitch’s Media Match (www.mitchsmediamatch.com), a service that connects Atlanta journalists with local experts.

The Spotlight Shines on Jennifer Parker with CrossRoadsNews!

Jennifer Ffrench Parker is the Editor/Publisher of CrossRoadsNews in Decatur. She launched the weekly community newspaper in 1995 with her husband Curtis Parker and focuses coverage on South DeKalb County in east metro Atlanta.

Before launching CrossRoadsNews, she had a varied career in newspapers. She was an assistant metro editor/business reporter with the AJC, a business writer for the Charlotte Observer, a writer for the Times Herald Record (Middletown, NY) the Wall Street Transcript (NYC), and the Daily News and the Daily Gleaner (Kingston, Jamaica).

What kind of story makes you proud to be a journalist?

I love stories that offer readers a heads-up on issues that will impact them. I know information is power and that an empowered community can be a more engaged community. I also love stories that make elected officials accountable to the citizens who put them in office.

What’s new and different about what you’re doing at CrossRoads?

At the core of what we do - telling people's stories - nothing has changed. What's different is the "how" of it. The revolution in the way humankind communicates is disrupting everything everywhere, including media. We too are grappling with how to maintain a profitable business in the age of the internet. Specifically, how to continue to fund good journalism when your sources of revenues have migrated elsewhere.

What is the best and worst thing about your job?

The best thing about being a journalist is being at the forefront of the issues facing my community. The worse thing, right now, is confronting the changing landscape.

What's the coolest thing people should know about you?

Don't know that "cool' is the right word, but I am an avid gardener who delights in reaping food for the table from my back yard! I find playing in the dirt therapeutic and to rewarded with a salad I grew is the big bonus.
