"4 Questions Journalist Spotlight" with Stephen Fowler from GPB Radio

Leff's Atlanta Media's Weekly Feature Conversation with an Atlanta Journalist

Each week, in partnership with Leff’s Atlanta Media (www.leffsatlantamedia.com), Atlanta Daybook presents our "Journalist Spotlight." Atlanta public relations professional Mitch Leff of Leff & Associates offers a conversation with a journalist in the Atlanta market, asking them four questions that'll help you learn more about local Atlanta media. What makes them tick? What's new at their media outlet? What drives them?

Mitch also operates Leff’s Atlanta Media (http://www.leffsatlantamedia.com) an online database with contact info for thousands of Atlanta-based journalists, and Mitch’s Media Match (www.mitchsmediamatch.com), a service that connects Atlanta journalists with local experts.

The Spotlight Shines on Stephen Fowler with Georgia Public Radio!

Stephen Fowler is the radio reporter focusing on politics at GPB, covering local politics, state politics and local around the state politics. He graduated from Emory University in 2016 and started at GPB as the afternoon news producer, reporter and fill-in host for All Things Considered. In college, he was the Executive Digital Editor of the Emory Wheel, and was in the inaugural cohort of the Georgia News lab.

What kind of story or segment makes you proud?

Working in public media, I’m proud of those ‘driveway moments’ that make people stop and think about what they’re hearing.  But more than, that I’m proud to do stories that educate, inform and make people more aware of the world around them.

What’s new and different about what you’re doing?

As a 25-year-old covering politics in a major media market, I have the opportunity to cover the perspectives of those in power and those seeking power, and to learn a lot of things about how our government works alongside my audience.

There’s definitely a generation gap (among other gaps) in who works in media, as well as who is portrayed in media. I’m focused on bringing more people into the fold that accurately represent our city, state and world.

What’s the best and worst thing about your job?

Best: Emails saying that I helped someone learn something new.

Worst: Friday afternoon press release emails, the “why aren’t you covering XXX thing you’re covering” emails and emails complaining about my voice or grammar on live radio.

What’s the coolest thing people should know about you?

I’m a musician: I sing in a competitive men’s chorus, am a professional French horn player and composer/arranger and play a few more instruments.
