"4 Questions Journalist Spotlight" on Kaitlyn Ross with WXIA-TV/11Alive

Leff's Atlanta Media's Weekly Feature Conversation with an Atlanta Journalist

Each week, in partnership with Leff’s Atlanta Media (www.leffsatlantamedia.com), Atlanta Daybook presents our "Journalist Spotlight." Atlanta public relations professional Mitch Leff of Leff & Associates offers a conversation with a journalist in the Atlanta market, asking them four questions that'll help you learn more about local Atlanta media. What makes them tick? What's new at their media outlet? What drives them?

Mitch also operates Leff’s Atlanta Media (http://www.leffsatlantamedia.com) an online database with contact info for thousands of Atlanta-based journalists, and Mitch’s Media Match (www.mitchsmediamatch.com), a service that connects Atlanta journalists with local experts.

The Spotlight Shines on Kaitlyn Ross with WXIA-TV/11Alive!

Kaitlyn Ross is a general assignment reporter for 11Alive. She’s been at the station for about five years and reported previously for WLTV in Jacksonville and the Spectrum News Group in New York. You’ll find her on your tv screen in the late afternoon and evening, on the 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts.

Oh, and she’s a graduate of Syracuse University (so this cold weather really shouldn’t bother her at all, right?).

What kind of story or segment makes you proud?

I love stories that make people feel valued. Taking the time to really listen to someone’s story and tell it in a way that they feel proud of is a huge accomplishment and very rewarding. It’s easy to get caught up in deadlines but doing a story that really changes someone’s life for the better brings me an enormous amount of joy.

What’s new and different about what you’re doing?

We are launching a new digital project called K9Kait that I am very excited about! I started a Facebook page a few months ago to tell fun dog stories and my station was totally on board. We are now going to have a section on the website that features those stories and shorter clips of them will air on our newscasts. (check out the link to the right)

Longer, web exclusive stories will be on Facebook and YouTube. I am learning a whole new process of storytelling on the YouTube platform. It’s been both exciting and terrifying.

What’s the best and worst thing about your job?

The best thing is all of the amazing people I get to meet. I am constantly in awe of the strength, grace, and courage of people who live right here in Atlanta. The worst part is covering crime. Hands down.

What’s the coolest thing people should know about you?

This question feels intimidating, I’m not that cool! The coolest story I’ve ever had the chance to report was in Greenland. I got to ride over on a C130 with the 109th Airlift Wing and report on the incredible work the National Science Foundation does there. We spent time with a couple who lives in a winterized tent on the north pole, clearing the runway for the planes to land. They made us cookies in an EZ Bake Oven.
