"4 Questions Journalist Spotlight" with Astrid Martinez, CBS46

Leff's Atlanta Media's Weekly Feature Conversation with an Atlanta Journalist

Each week, in partnership with Leff’s Atlanta Media (www.leffsatlantamedia.com), Atlanta Daybook presents our "Journalist Spotlight." Atlanta public relations professional Mitch Leff of Leff & Associates offers a conversation with a journalist in the Atlanta market, asking them four questions that'll help you learn more about local Atlanta media. What makes them tick? What's new at their media outlet? What drives them?

Mitch operates Leff’s Atlanta Media (http://www.leffsatlantamedia.com) an online database with contact info for thousands of Atlanta-based journalists, and Mitch’s Media Match (www.mitchsmediamatch.com), a service that connects Atlanta journalists with local experts.

The Spotlight Shines on Astrid Martinez with WGCL-TV/CBS46!

Astrid Martinez is the Entertainment and Culture Reporter for CBS46 and Peachtree TV in Atlanta. You’ll see her “Astrid in the ATL” segments covering entertainment, arts, food and culture across the city.

She’s been at the station for almost three years. Before that she reported for KXAS TV in Dallas, WBTV TV in Charlotte, KGBT TV in Harlington, TX and WFTX TV in Fort Myers, FL. Oh, and Astrid’s an Emmy-award winner and a former Miss Colombia USA.

What kind of story or segment makes you proud?

The ones that help bring more awareness of the growing and diverse community we live in and looking for ways to learn and connect with one another. I love highlighting stories of resilience and overcoming adversity.

What’s new and different about what you’re doing?

I was a general assignment reporter for 10 years, mainly covering border crimes, immigration, and politics. And although I learned so much, it definitely weighed heavy on my heart due to the all the negative news.

Now I cover culture and entertainment and it’s been a complete lifestyle change. I get to talk about all the amazing things making our city great and putting a spotlight on the ATL from movies, to music and arts. Having a degree in theater as well as journalism, its truly an honor for me to interview so many creative people. It’s a dream for me and I hope that I am able to tell these stories in a much different way from other entertainment news since I do have a journalistic background.

What’s the best and worst thing about your job?

Best thing is meeting new people every day. Worst thing is not enough time in the day to cover all the fun happenings in Atlanta.

What’s the coolest thing people should know about you?

I consider myself to be super down to earth, a bit shy and I always try to lead with kindness.
